Everything You Need to Know About Xeomin, the Botox Alternative
The iconic Botox is not the only show in wrinkle-smoothing town. There are two other injectable alternatives Xeomin and Dysport. These three treatments are competitors in the same class of drug called a neuromodulator.
“Botox is the original one and has become a generic term, like Coke, Kleenex, and Google” explains Dr. Tahsini, from Skin Works Medical Spa, Torrance, California. “But all three brands work by very similar mechanisms. When you inject them, they block the signal going between the nerve going to the muscle, so the muscle can’t make the wrinkles.”
All of them take about three to five days to kick in and are said to last for about three to five months. Dr. Tahsini has already explained the differences between Botox and Dysport, and which of these two treatments is best for you. In this article, you can read on for your crash course in a Xeomin treatment. You have probably heard the rumor that when injected enough times with Botox, your body has the ability to become immune to it. If Botox has started to lose its magic touch, rest assured that you have another option in a Xeomin treatment.
If you’re already considering a Xeomin treatment at Skin Works Medical Spa, Torrance, or you are only curious about how it works, in this article, Dr. Tahsini shares with us all the details on how it works, who is the best candidate, and what differs between this formula and its injectable counterparts, Botox and Dysport.
What Is Xeomin, and What Does It Do?
Everybody ages differently, but if you express yourself through movements in your face (like most people do), wrinkles and frown lines appear. They form by repeated movements and muscle contractions, meaning they can even develop in younger adults. Over time, as your skin ages, these repeated expressions cause lasting frown lines.
Neurotoxins, such as XEOMIN, are prescription medications that work by blocking nerve impulses to temporarily relax the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a refreshed, even and younger appearance. Xeomin is an FDA approved drug and is similar to BOTOX® and Dysport®, which also use the Botulinum A protein.
Xeomin is approved for treatment of moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows, as well as other areas.
Is it the Same Thing as Botox and Dysport
Wait, you may wonder if Xeomin is the same as Botox and Dysport?
What’s different about Xeomin is that it is somewhat of a purer form of the toxin.
“One advantage to Xeomin is that there are fewer molecules in its formula for your body to have a reaction to,” says Dr. Tahsini. He compares the three injectibles to M&M candies: “Botox and Dysport may have red or yellow outer shells, while Xeomin, is just the chocolate core. The middle, active portion is the same in all of them, so it behaves the same way as the previous two.”
Because Xeomin does not have the extra proteins on the outside, it is much less likely that you will have a reaction to it. This means that there is less risk of developing antibodies against this treatment than the other available neurotoxins. The body develops antibodies in response to a foreign invader and attacks. In theory, antibodies could prevent a neurotoxin from having its desired effects.
Who Is a Better Candidate for Xeomin Over Botox?
If you tend to have a lot of allergic reactions, Xeomin might be a good one to start with because there are less proteins around it.
You are also a good candidate for this treatment if you become immune to Botox. The 63-year-old beauty Christie Brinkley shares that Xeomin is the secret for her timeless, youthful look.
Dr. Tahsini notes that doctors and patients usually can’t tell the difference of the end result between the two treatments, although some patients noted that there was less of a tight Botox-esque feeling in the areas where Xeomin was injected once it started kicking in. “If you don’t want to feel the tightness as much, then you’re a good candidate for Xeomin,” he says.
How Long Does It Last?
The effects of Xeomin occur within 5 days, and the results last from three to four months, making it comparable to Botox in terms of both onset and duration of action. There’s no study proving that one works faster than the other, there’s some anecdotal experience one might work a little faster and some people think the Xeomin looks a little softer,” says Dr. Tahsini. It’s different for different people. Everyone has different concentrations of different enzymes in their body, and it’s all interacting differently.
Xeomin should not be used interchangeably with other botulinum products. After this period the treated muscles slowly return to their baseline. Thus, to maintain the effects of any wrinkle relaxing treatment, injections should be repeated every three to four months.
What Should I Avoid Post-Treatment?
Dr. Tahsini recommends, not to rub or scratch the treated area, or use treatments that involve applying heat directly to the skin, as heat can slow down the binding of Xeomin in the same way it does with Botox and Dysport.
